Meratus Line Launches New Direct Weekly Service Surabaya to Ambon, Maluku

Meratus Line, true to its commitment to the development of the eastern provinces of Indonesia, launches a new direct weekly service from Surabaya to Ambon, Maluku in April 2010.

Maluku (Moluccas) is an archipelago consists of over six hundreds islands, big and small. The large islands are Seram, Buru, Yamdena and Wetar. The capital, Ambon, is located on Ambon Island.

Spice Islands – as this archipelago was known in 1500 – 1600; was the main focus of political play and fighting between Europe’s then maritime and trading powers; Portuguese, Spain, Britain and the Netherlands.  Under the 1667 Treaty of Breda, the island of Manhattan, now a major commercial, financial, and cultural center of both the United States and the world – was handed over by the Dutch to the British in exchange for Run Island, a small island in Banda Islands, thus ensuring the Dutch a full control over the archipelago’s nutmeg production.*)

The Maluku archipelago is also well known for its marine biodiversity. The tenth Sail Indonesia, an annual sailing rally which starts from Darwin in July and followed by three months of linked activity all across Indonesia – highlights the historical Banda Islands and Spice trade route in this year event, Sail Banda 2010. **)

Meratus Line’s direct weekly service between Surabaya and Ambon will have vessels departing from Surabaya every Friday. Two vessels will be deployed for the service, MV. Meratus Progress 508 TEUS with 50 reefer plugs, and MV. Mahakam River 426 TEUS with 40 reefer plugs – to cater for the many requirements of the trade, including refrigerated / perishable goods.

This direct weekly service Surabaya to Ambon will further enhance existing Meratus Line service network to the eastern islands of Indonesia; there are already regular shuttle services from Surabaya to Maumere, Flores, to Kupang in West Timor, to Benete Bay in Sumbawa, and to Dili, the capital of Timor Leste.

We hope to bring an attractive solution to the bustling trade and economy of the people of Maluku by providing a safe and regular container service with possibilities for direct export shipment overseas.
